Sunday, April 23, 4:00 p.m. 7th Havana Film Festival in New York 2006 Homage to Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television (EICTV), San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Founded by Gabriel García Marquez, Fernando Birri and Julio García Espinosa, the most influential film school in Latin America celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The homage will start with a presentation of award winning short films by recent EICTV students and graduates (90 min). - Al otro lado del mar by Patricia Ortega (Venezuela, 2005, 12 min) - - Ernesto, mi amigo by Jakov Dakovic (Tugoslavia, 1998, 15 min) - Gente que llora by Hatem Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla (Spain, 2001, 16 min) - Kung Fu by Onaje Lataillade (US, 2003, 15 min)

Monday, April 24, 6:00 p.m. 7th Havana Film Festival in New York 2006 TRIBUTE TO TOMAS GUTIERREZ ALEA On the 10th anniversary of his death, Mirta Ibarra, Alea’s wife and actress, Sandra Levinson, founder and executive director of the Center for Cuban Studies, and Alea’s friend will discuss the life of one of the most influential filmmakers in the world, known for being a master at infusing historical and contemporary stories with politically pointed commentary and satirical twist. Moderated by Jerry Carlson, professor of film studies at City College of NY and a producer at CUNY TV. Sponsored by King Juan Carlos I Of Spain Center, NYU. Panel and Screening - 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Panel on EICTV A conversation with Fernando Birri (first director of EICTV); Marketta Kimbrell (professor of Film and TV, NYU, EICTV); Walter Bernstein (award-winning screen-writer and former EICTV instructor); and Carlos Peralta (former EICTV student). Sandy Lieberson (Chairman of Film London) will moderate the discussion on the school’s contribution to filmmaking around the world. Simultaneous translation in English provided by LART
- 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.: Screening Za 2005, lo viejo y lo nuevo / Za 2005, The New and the Old (70 min) Fernando Birri. Argentina-Cuba. US Premiere. A tribute to legendary vanguard, Cesare Zavattini, poet and screenwriter of the Italian neorrealsit cinema. Za 2005 includes sequences from some of the best EICTV student theses films of the past two decades.
